Most gulls, particularly Larus species, are ground-nesting carnivores, which will take live food or scavenge opportunistically. Live food often includes crabs and small fish. Gulls have prophylactic unhinging jaws which allow them to consume large prey. Apart from the kittiwakes, gulls are typically coastal or inland species, rarely venturing far out to sea.

The large species take up to four years to attain full adult plumage, but two years is typical for small gulls. Large White-Headed Gulls are typically long-lived birds, with a maximum age of 49 years recorded for the Herring Gull.

Portland is the largest city in Maine and is the county seat of Cumberland County.The 2010 city population was 66,194,[4] growing 3 percent since the census of 2000. With a metro population of over 500,000, the Greater Portland area is home to more than one-third of Maine's total population.

I currently live in Surprise, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix. I was born and raised in the beautiful state of Maine, where my interest in photograhy was discovered. I got my first camera, a Kodak Brownie, when I was six or seven years old, and I've been hooked on the art of photography ever since. A year or so later, I got my first processing and print making kit and I began to realize that I could be as creative, if not more so, in the darkroom than in the field. Over the years, my cameras and darkroom got more complex, giving me more creative tools to work with.
