With increasing emphasis at school on developing academic skills in children at younger and younger ages, what role does dramatic (�pretend�) play have in early childhood? Is the idea of play merely a throwback to another time when we did not have as much information about how children learn to read and acquire math skills? Is play a luxury? Is it worth it to sacrifice playtime in order to make sure that children learn the letters of the alphabet and know how to count, especially those �at risk?� In any case, don't children already play enough at home?

About Dick Botkin
I currently live in Surprise, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix. I was born and raised in the beautiful state of Maine, where my interest in photograhy was discovered. I got my first camera, a Kodak Brownie, when I was six or seven years old, and I've been hooked on the art of photography ever since. A year or so later, I got my first processing and print making kit and I began to realize that I could be as creative, if not more so, in the darkroom than in the field. Over the years, my cameras and darkroom got more complex, giving me more creative tools to work with.
